About Tom
I've been DJ'ing for over 18 years. I started at the Bellevue
Gardens in Lower Hutt for Visions Discotheques. I played in the lounge bar and
we were open from 7-10 pm. These days we're only leaving home at 10 pm to party!
Nevertheless we had that place pumping! From there I moved into the Club scene
- including Club De Ville's and The Big Easy. Hard yakka, some of those places
were 9 pm-4 am.
During that time I went along to many other functions with some
very well established and professional DJs. These guys were old - I mean, they
were in their 30's! The functions were things like the Wellington Rock 'n' Roll
Club, Dine and Dance at the Tasman Hotel or the Flamingo, Marist St Pats Rugby
Club, 21sts, Blue Light Discos, the list goes on...
Later I worked with another established business in Wellington
- Campbell's Discotheques. Campbell too, had me all over the place. One that
I remember is the Totara Lodge in Trentham - DJing 3 nights a week, plus the
Karaoke competitions on a Wednesday night. Sometimes I think I slept there!
Next I bought my own equipment. Very quickly I established
myself with many Wellington venues - including the Park Royal (now Hotel Inter-Continental)
- as well as many repeat clients. One that comes to mind is the Clench family.
With their children's 21sts, their friends' 21sts, a wedding and a 40th, I have
done 7 functions for them! (Thanks guys!). Also thanks to the Moody Family -
three out of four children's weddings in the last two years - Thank you too!
In the last ten years I have specialised in weddings and my
relationship with the venues has certainly strengthened. The importance of doing
a GREAT job at every function has been an integral part of not only my business,
but also theirs, in repeat and referred work.
My piece of advice to anyone looking for a DJ, is to check
that the DJ comes recommended by a venue. This is a 'third party' testament
to the consistent quality a DJ must have, along with ability and equipment.
Well, a lot has changed in 18 years. Then we were 80% vinyl
and 20% tape. Now we are 80% PC and 20% CD (or iPod). Make sure those using computer are
playing 'live' and not using a pre-recorded playlist. Also dramatically changed
for the Mobile DJ is lighting and effects. Twenty years ago it was the four
coloured bulbs flashing on and off. Now it is controlled, intelligent lighting
like you see in major productions and live concerts! Very dynamic, yet subtle
in colour and effect.
And me? Well, I am married with three gorgeous girls aged 12, 9, and
nearly 4. I've changed careers from account manager back to being a full time mobile disc jockey
and filling in my quiet times as a carpenter contracting to a specialist bathroom company
(www.bathroomsolutions2000.co.nz).
But I have not forgotten that, bottom-line, I am being paid to entertain - not
only to the birthday girl, or the bride and groom but to EVERYONE in that room.
That is, not only the music that is played, but also when and how it is played.
Not all DJs are created equally!
Please give me a call, or an email. I welcome the opportunity
to talk to you about your requirements and answer any questions you may have.
I look forward to making your celebration a roaring success.
